Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings

The City of Dublin is aware that recent unplanned power outages have greatly affected residents in Eastern Dublin. The City has been informed by PG&E that the unplanned power outages are due to PG&E's Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings which helps prevent wildfires. Additional information can be found below including a Fact Sheet and video.

To help prevent wildfires, PG&E has evolved their safety efforts. This includes installing safety settings on powerlines in and around high fire-risk areas. These are known as Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS), and they help prevent falling tree branches, animals and other hazards from starting a wildfire.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EPSS?
EPSS is used in high fire-threat areas to prevent wildfires by turning power off automatically if there is a problem.

Are these planned outages?
No, unfortunately, these are unplanned outages and therefore advance noticing is not available. However, please make sure you're contact information is up to date with PG&E to ensure you receive their outage alerts. Please visit PG&E's MyAlerts webpage.

How does EPSS work?
EPSS are advanced settings on powerlines. They allow powerlines to automatically turn off power within one-tenth of a second. This can happen when there's a hazard, like a tree branch falling or a bird colliding into a powerline, which can cause a fire. These settings are in high fire-risk and surrounding areas.

Does EPSS reduce wildfire risk?
According to PG&E, in 2022 and 2023, EPSS reduced wildfire risk by 68% and 72% respectively in ignitions on EPSS-enabled powerlines.

Does PG&E have resources and tools available to help residents?
Yes, PG&E has a Portable Battery Program, Generator and Battery Rebate Program, and a Backup Power Transfer Meter Program available to help residents. To learn more about any of these programs, please visit PG&E's EPSS webpage.
