Used Oil Recycling

How to Recycle Oil & Oil Filters on Your Garbage Collection Day:

  • Call AVI at 925-479-9545 to request a special jug for oil and a bag for filters.
  • Set the filled jug and bag at the curb next to your carts on your collection day.
  • Make sure the jug and/or bag is sealed properly and clearly visible from the street.

Steps to changing your motor oil for recycling

  1. Drain motor oil into a drain pan.
  2. Drain your oil filter for 24 can hold up to a quart of oil.
  3. Pour your used oil into a reusable container with a tight-fitting lid. Put your filter in a plastic bag or sealed container. Well-drained motor oil containers can go in the recycling cart.
  4. Take your oil and filter to a drop-off center or find out if they can be collected through your curbside recycling program (see the list below).

IMPORTANT: Please don't mix oil with anything!

How to Dispose of Used Cooking Oil in Your Home:

  • Never wash cooking fats, oil, or grease down the drain.
  • Scrape excess food waste from pots and pans into the green organics cart after cooking and wipe cookware "clean" with a disposable towel prior to washing.
  • Small amounts of oil can be placed in tightly sealed, unbreakable containers in the trash.
