New Compost and Recycling Law
Effective January 1, 2022, a new California law (SB 1383) requires that compostable materials, including food scraps, food-soiled paper, cardboard, and yard trimmings, be kept out of landfills to prevent the production of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. In Alameda County, the law is implemented under the Organics Reduction and Recycling Ordinance. Residents are required to subscribe to curbside composting and recycling collection service and sort materials into the correct containers. This flyer covers how to properly sort recyclables and compostables, and provides tips for preventing food waste.
Watch the video below to learn why sorting your food scraps is so important.
What Goes Where?
Hazardous waste does not belong in any of AVI's collection containers and should be taken to the designated facilities for proper disposal. Visit the Electronic Waste and Hazardous Waste page to learn how to safely dispose of household hazardous waste.
