New Compost and Recycling Law
Effective January 1, 2022, a new California law (SB 1383) requires that compostable materials, including food scraps, food-soiled paper, cardboard, and yard trimmings, be kept out of landfills to prevent the production of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. In Alameda County, the law is implemented under the Organics Reduction and Recycling Ordinance. Residents are required to subscribe to curbside composting and recycling collection service and sort materials into the correct containers. This flyer covers how to properly sort recyclables and compostables, and provides tips for preventing food waste.
- Contact AVI at 925-479-9545 to set up compost or recycling service if you don't already have it.

What Goes Where?
Questions about what goes where? Visit StopWaste's Curbside Guide or AVI's Recycling How-To Guide.
Compost
Compostable materials include food scraps, food soiled paper, and plant debris. At the end of 2022, AVI delivered kitchen pails to all Dublin residents. These kitchen pails can help keep kitchens clean and neat while collecting food craps and other compostables. Kitchen pails can be lined with newspaper or a paper bag. When the pail is filled, the contents should be emptied into the green, compost cart. For more compost tips, visit StopWaste's Food Scrap Composting page.
Recycling
Recyclable materials include clean paper and cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, glass bottles and jars, and metal and aluminum cans. Small household batteries can be recycled when contained in a clear plastic bag and placed on top of the recycling cart on collection day.

Landfill
Landfill or garbage materials are items that are not compostable or recyclable, like plastic bags and wrappers, polystyrene foam, waxed drink cartons, plastic utensils and straws, and diapers and pet waste.
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste does not belong in any of AVI's collection containers and should be taken to the designated facilities for proper disposal. Visit the Electronic Waste and Hazardous Waste page to learn how to safely dispose of household hazardous waste.
